Commissioned by NS Railinfra beheer B.V., Van der Ende began preserving the Suurhoff railroad bridge at Europoort in the spring of 1999. The surface area to be conserved was approximately 13,000 m². The work was completed in mid-2000.
A detailed safety plan was developed to ensure the safety of workers while working on the underside of the bridge. The primary concern was to prevent danger of collision between ships and the scaffolding structure suspended under the bridge. The Hartelkanaal is very busy shipping channel, so a mandatory course line was marked with buoy markings.
Also placed on either side of the bridge were so-called vraying vessels. A permanently present patrol vessel closely monitored shipping movements. It gave instructions to the grit radios by radio link in case of an imminent calamity, such as ships threatening to go off course.
