When it comes to major maintenance on preservation systems, it’s mostly about grit blasting and application of paint systems. Yet there is often much more involved. Take the Oosterscheldekering major maintenance project, for example. The actual maintenance work is preceded by an enormous amount of preparatory work.
In twelve months, several revolutionary auxiliary structures were designed and built. These must be able to withstand the heaviest storms and associated wave forces of the North Sea. They must be completely dust-proof and insulated so that we can carry out maintenance on sliders and piers more efficiently and safely.
Every detail has been thought of. A modular construction, so that we can apply the structure to all different sizes of slides and piers. All the necessary safety provisions to be able to assemble the modules safely above the swirling water. Last week, the components of the auxiliary construction were transported to the Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier. With this we have reached a new milestone in this special project. Completion will take place in 2035.
