Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier maintenance
The assignment
The maintenance of the Oosterscheldekering has been awarded to OSK Conserveringsgroep B.V., a partnership between Van der Ende Infrastructure B.V. and GSB Services B.V. This is an important step in the preservation of this crucial flood barrier. The project team is currently being put together to manage the work.
Last Thursday, a giant drywell was placed around one of the level measuring stations in the Eastern Scheldt. These monitoring stations play a crucial role in the barrier’s warning system. The data collected helps in the decision making for possible closures, which must be operational at all times.
Work
The gauging stations, with a diameter of 3.30 meters, are enclosed by a 5.20-meter drywell. After the water is pumped out of the tank, the old coating is completely removed by grit blasting up to two meters below the low water line (NAP -3.00 m). A new, durable paint system will then be applied to protect the monitoring stations from the influences of water and weather.
Our partner, GSB Services B.V., is carrying out this work on behalf of OSK Conserveringsgroep B.V. Thanks to their expertise in surface treatment and conservation, the lifespan of the gauging stations is significantly extended.
The sequel
Installation of the drywell at the first gauge station has been successful. In about six weeks, the tub will be moved to the North Sea inner harbor. There, the second gauging station will be treated in the same way. Thus, step by step, an optimally functioning Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier will be ensured.
